I am once again dumping my raw thoughts on the Lemmy and asking your opinion on them.

My first dog (and pet in general) is nowhere near the age of me needing to think about putting her down, but having a dog has introduced me to the world of opinions on whether they should be put down when they get too old.

I’ve read a lot of very strong pro-euthanasia pet owner opinions, even going as far as accusing people refusing to put down their pets as “cruel” or actively wanting their pets to suffer. It really seems like a majority of pet owners, at least in the English speaking world, think putting their pets down is something you should always do when their bodies deteriorate past a certain point, and every time this is brought up you get a lot of emotional comments shaming anyone who doesn’t subscribe to that philosophy.

The core argument being made seems to be that when their health conditions pile up past a point, it’s not “worth” letting the pet live anymore, supposedly for their sake. But when I think about it further, I ask how can you be sure? All animals want to keep living, that’s literally why animals evolved brains in the first place, to keep their bodies alive for as long as possible. How can you, who is not the pet, say for sure they would prefer to die than keep living? You can’t ask them, and you can’t get in their mind to determine how much they still appreciate being alive. Even the oldest, sickest pet will still make an effort to keep themselves alive however they can: eating, drinking water, moving out of the way of danger, etc. As far as I know, no animal (at least the animals we keep as pets) have an instinct to just give up and stop going through the motions of life past a certain age. Doesn’t that imply they always want to live?

I consider the decision to no longer live past a certain age and certain number of health problems to be a uniquely human thing, and it doesn’t feel right to impose that on a pet who probably doesn’t have those thoughts. Even with humans, we refrain from making that decision for them. Someone who’s in a coma isn’t eligible for euthanasia just because they haven’t expressed a desire to live, and the most their family can legally do is to stop actively keeping them alive with technology and let them die naturally. But if they don’t die right after taking them off life support, you can’t just straight up kill them, they need to die by themselves. Why isn’t this philosophy applied to pets, who can never consent to euthanasia? You don’t have to keep subjecting your pet to more and more invasive treatments just to extend their lives by a small amount, but at the same time, what gives you the moral right to unilaterally decide when they’re done with living? Why is letting your pet die naturally in the comfort of their own home seen as cruel, while choosing for them when they should die is considered humane?

What do you think? I genuinely don’t know how I feel about this but want to understand the problem and where I stand on it before my dog gets old enough for these things to apply.

to be clear I’m gonna be counter protesting a protest of a drag show so I’m being pro drag show.

I put in my order for a megaphone to take to protest and events. the people protesting the show are the biblical type from what I hear, I’m actually pretty ignorant on the details, but I smell an instigation opportunity, or an opportunity to spread love to drag queens. I’m not into drag shows all I know is Rupaul drag show exist and its like a clothing designer show.

I need more pro drag queen phrases to fall back on. I’ll say we love out lgbt community if I hear the f slur.

but i have came up with some things like pointing to a preacher and saying they’re gonna have the next chomo/lester scandal.

or I can be extra funny and say that they’re here to join us take on billionaire pedro-philes like Donald trump.

ill up for pro-drag queen, anti-hater, or subversive phrases.

Do they have any rule that says you need a minimum number of users on a site to fall under the law?

If servers of someinstance.co.au fine if they move to hosting in Finland?

It just feels like a nightmare.

I’m aware that in many cases the answer is simply, “they don’t,” as many people don’t seem to have the historical or theoretical curiosity to investigate it. However, I genuinely want to encourage more cerebral discussion around here, so I’ll give a brief rundown.

The Second International was a big federation of socialists/social democrats with lots of different perspectives, the largest being Germany’s SDP (which still exists today). The aim was to foster international cooperation and solidarity, and to promote the interests of the common people, including preventing the outbreak of a major European war. The Basel Manifesto, passed by a unanimous vote at the International Socialist Congress in 1912, stated:

If a war threatens to break out, it is the duty of the working classes and their parliamentary representatives in the countries involved supported by the coordinating activity of the International Socialist Bureau to exert every effort in order to prevent the outbreak of war by the means they consider most effective, which naturally vary according to the sharpening of the class struggle and the sharpening of the general political situation.

In case war should break out anyway it is their duty to intervene in favor of its speedy termination and with all their powers to utilize the economic and political crisis created by the war to arouse the people and thereby to hasten the downfall of capitalist class rule.

The Second International fell apart when the SDP voted in favor of issuing war credits, indicating support for German entry into WWI, with other social democratic parties following suit. This made any hope of international cooperation impossible. Although everyone said that they opposed the war in principle, they all found reasons to rally around their respective flags and point fingers at each other for who’s side was more responsible.

Lenin was an exception to this trend and not only strongly opposed Russian participation in the war, but even went so far as to explictly call for Russia’s defeat. The Leninist perspective is that the social democratic parties betrayed the international socialist movement and failed to oppose the war because had become filled with opportunists, people who were willing to go against the interests of the people out of fear of political persecution (or, in the interest of advancing their own careers) and that, from this, we can see that attempts to work within the system to achieve reform are vulnerable such mechanisms of subversion.

The breakdown of the Second International was not just a disagreement between social democrats and Leninists, but also between social democrats of different countries. When their respective countries turned against each other, and the range of acceptable opinions narrowed to the point that opposing the war would be seen as treasonous, they all found reasons to start fighting each other, in a largely pointless war on an unprecedented scale.

Is it really possible to build any sort of international coalition if a party limits itself to the range of opinions that are permissible within a capitalist system? And are modern social democrats even interested in that sort of internationalism anymore?

Assuming that in the future most jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence or other advanced systems, is it (in your opinion) highly likely that the powerful figures of this world would want to commit genocide against a large part of the world’s population, or would we be dealing with true philanthropists?

I often hear complaints about Donald Trumps short term temper tamprums he throws. Random acts to flood the zone. He can talk for hours about complicated regulations, and how he hates them for making his tractors expensive to fix he uses to mow his lawn on his gigantic properties (insert any other shittalk here).

So I wonder, how strategic the team behind him operates to secure the survival of his ideology, “Trumpism”? Do they have a long term vision? Something secret and intentional behind even Project 2025?

Companies like Palantir will greatly benefit from Trumps presidency I think, even long after Trump is gone.

Google has definitely gotten worse in the past few years and it’s fucking impossible to find any articles or news or academic papers or anything on any topic that doesn’t fit the opinion of Washington or Langley.

Anyone have any recs on what else to use.

I’m going to be delivering an online intro to programming session to a non-technical crowd who will be “following along at home”. Because it’s online, I can’t provide them with machines that are already set up with an appropriate development environment.

I’m familiar with Linuxes and BSDs but honestly have no idea how to get set up with programming stuff on Windows or macOS which presumably most of these people will use, so I need something I can easily instruct them on how to install, and has good cross-platform support so that a basic programming lesson will work on whatever OS the attendees are running. Remember they are non-technical so may need more guidance on installation, so it should be something that is easy to explain.

My ideas:

C: surely every OS comes with a C compiler pre-installed? I know C code is more platform-specific, but for basic “intro to programming” programs it should be pretty much the same. I think it’s a better language for teaching as you can teach them more about how the computer actually works, and can introduce them to concepts about memory and types that can be obscured by more high-level languages.

Python: popular for teaching programming, for the reasons above I’d prefer not to use Python because using e.g. C allows me to teach them more about how the computer works. You could code in Python and never mention types for instance. Rmemeber this is only an intro session so we’re not doing a full course. But Python is probably easy to install on a lot of OSes? And of course easy to program in too.

Java: good cross-platform support, allows for teaching about types. Maybe a good compromise between the benefits outlined above for C and Python?

Anything opinions?

Without going through the whole source code. You can just look up the information on the web, but how do you know whether to trust that information?

(Assuming no security audit has been listed on the website, or the audit seems outdated.)

I personally like to minimize name changes as much as possible because usually, the current name Just Works and I don’t really think it’s worth it to break muscle memory or replace signage and stuff.

Marginally related; what is it with American stadiums being named after big companies? And when the naming rights expire, people just have to get used to the new name??

I go eat at McDonald’s a lot and almost every time I can hear the staff call out an order number which is ready, but nobody comes to pick it up.

Why would you pay for food only to run off then?

I’m in Germany, in case that’s relevant.

Maybe this is just me imagining things and is being completely wrong.
I have just been thinking about this question and especially after watching Home Alone 2 in New York. It may just be that I think it looks more crowded in the movies because it actually is a set filled with people, but also there probably should be some truth to it as you now can do so much online that makes people able to stay inside instead of walk to a location.

I am also wondering if the movies represent the real life rush hour, and probably always shows the “most crowded” times of the day.

Are any of you living of have been living in New York that has seen a difference, or am I just imagining the change?

The screenshot is from this video (1993): www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT4lDU-QLUY witch I feel is giving me the vibes I am talking about.

I created a video channel on a PeerTube server, but its service quality is poor, so I have migrated everything to another server. The first server’ channel is still open, but I have a migration notice on the channel’s home page.

The problem is that I have 8 followers on the old server whom I would like to notify directly. How can I do that using my PeerTube handle?

I tried to follow my PeerTube account from my Mastodon account, but it shows “Pending” in Mastodon. When I go to my PeerTube account, I don’t see any place for messages, requests, etc.

Any documention or suggestions for me to look at? Thanks.

When I was working as an intern the company was into a group called PSI Seminars.

They are also into Tony Robbins.

When I didn’t finish PSI Basic everything changed. I had no future there.

How can I explain to a future potential employer that my last employer was in a cult without looking unprofessional?

I highly think they are going to throw me under the bus if used as a reference.

compare these 2 high heeled sandals:

the ankle strap on the white model seems like a good choice: it’s low enough for the feet to slide in and wont touch the leg, meaning nothing constrains the ankle’s rotation.

the red model seems like an odd choice: won’t it make it ankle rotation more cumbersome? It would be more logical to attach the ankle strap to the foot and not the leg. Or am I missing something?

It also looks strange, having an ankle strap so high. Why would the designer attach the strap right at the end of the slingback and not in the middle, like in the white model?
